Belonging to the Brand by Mark Schaefer

Once again Mark Schaefer sets the trend in Marketing with his new book Belonging to the brand – Why Community is the Last Great Marketing Strategy.

A trend I truly believe in and a trend I am trying to explore on a daily basis.

Mark explores the concept of building brand communities and how it can be leveraged as a marketing strategy.

He further argues that with the rise of social media and the decline of traditional marketing methods, building a community around a brand is becoming increasingly important for companies to connect with their customers and build brand loyalty.

As you certainly know by now, our profession is once again disrupted by tools such as Chat GPT but it’s up to humans to be smart about the way we use technology as an enabler to expand a company’s strategic options.

I highly recommend you read Mark’s new book “Belonging to the Brand”. The book is a comprehensive guide for marketers and business owners looking to build a strong community around their brand, and use it to drive customer engagement and growth.

But remember,as long as the Matterhorn stands, everything is going to be alright.

Cheers people and talk to you soon again.

Book Review: Return On Influence by Mark W. Schaefer

After already having resolved the mistery of Twitter through Mark Schaefer’s book “The Tao of Twitter” (affiliate link) I knew I had to get his new book “Return on Influence” (affiliate link) immediately. Mark explores the power of what he calls today citizen influencer. Everybody including YOU has the chance today to become an internet celebrity. You can earn your influence through a high Klout score which is discussed in depth in his book.

Not only will you learn more about social scoring systems you will also find great case studies explaining how big companies use today these systems to find the right people to connect, who can create buzz and  become the brands powerful word of mouth influencers on the web.

Many social thinkers such as Mitch Joel, Michael Stelzner, Gini Dietrich,Robert Cialdini, Robert Scoble and many more appear in the book with great stories. Another interesting part of the book is where Mark tells you more about how people try to game the system in order to get a higher social scoring. Not really something you should follow to do but certainly good to know;-)

I am not really in favor of judging people in a job interview based on your Klout score but I get the point. You can certainly use it as one of many criterias but your first impression, your charisma, your persuasiveness and of course your skill sets should still outweigh a number today. Nevertheless whether we like it or not social scoring is happening, period.

His book is definitely a hot topic and we live in a very exciting time where new technologies will continue to shaken up businesses;-)

Congratulations to Mark for another great book;-)

I am following Mark on his blog {GROW} and can only recommend his book.

Return on Influence by Mark W. Schaefer

Finally I took the time to download the kindle version of Mark W. Schaefer’s new Book Return On Influence: The Revolutionary Power of Klout, Social Scoring, and Influence Marketing
(affilate link) I really look forward to read. Only by just reading the introduction text where Mark says: “I have become a number” makes me wonder where is this leading us? I am sure to find in this book interesting stories about people’s own experiences which will lead me to rethink the quote “I have become a number”.

Our numbers are being compiled, sorted, sliced, diced, priced, dissected, combined and filleted in ways that help companies sell more of their stuff. — Mark W. Schaefer

Do The Work by Steven Pressfield

If you are stuck with your work, feel resistance and don’t know how to finish your work read this manifesto Do The Work by Steven Pressfield.

One of my favorite parts of this manifesto is when Steven Pressfield tells you to stay stupid. Why? Because any smart person who understood how difficult were the tasks they had set themselves would have pulled the plug before he even began.

Read Do The Work and take notes, pass it on to your friends who are stuck and get them moving.

Socialnomics – Book review

I can say that Erik Qualman has won another fan of the socialnomics videos and his book. Erik Qualman is the author of Socialnomics: How Social Media Transforms the Way We Live and Do Business (affiliate)
The book is an excellent read and provides practical insights and tips for everyone. Erik provides case studies on how companies have to incorporate social media into their business strategy and how to use it to their advantages. Socialnomics is definitely not a fad but a new way of life.

The book socialnomics

Takeaways include:

  • Obama’s success driven by social media.
  • Winners and Losers in a 140-Character World.
  • Next Steps for Companies and The “Glass House Generation”.
  • and many more.

Some of my personal key messages that I am taking away are:

  • Today consumers pay less attention to above the line mediums. They prefer to listen to their neighbors what they have to say about products and services.
  • We no longer have to search for the news – It finds us.
  • Search Engines are recognizing the social media shift and try to make their offerings more social.
  • Businesses can follow what is being said about them or their industry.
  • Real-time updates of news events

I also would like to empathize that Erik speaks about “The next generation can’t speak”. Fact is that the desire and ability to meet new people has rapidly eroded so much that humans fear public speaking.  I like to see that Erik mentions the downsides of not having as much face to face interactions as we used to have. It’s a challenge we have to face today and in the future.

I follow Erik Qualman on Twitter http://www.twitter.com/equalman and recommend his book socialnomics.
