The Future of Marketing #1

Video Location – Market Square, Knoxville, Tennessee after our hiking in the Smoky mountains.

After all these years, I finally met in person Mark Schaefer at The Uprising event in Knoxville, TN.

What a JOY and listen in this video to some of the takeaways directly from Mark.

  • Belonging and creating a community is the future of Marketing.  Hint: Web 3.0 is exactly about belonging.
  • If you have a great community and belonging you don’t need advertising or SEO. You have everything you need that leads to business connections.
  • When you bring people together and meet them face to face it changes everthing. The Uprising event is proof of creating a magical bond among 30 marketing thought leaders.

Join the Markting Rebellion and the Uprising is coming to Europe. Stay tuned.

Cheers people!

PS – I will talk more about Web 3.0 in my next post.

In Which Direction Blows The Wind In Marketing in 2020?

Hi people,

and hello from Parc de Milan in Lausanne. That’s the place where I normally go for my daily lunch walks when I’m in Lausanne. I mean, you overlook “lac léman” and the mountains. It’s just beautiful. And to me, that’s just what I need to refresh my mind and to get some fresh air over lunch.

People, today, I wanted to take a minute with you to share with you my three marketing ideas for 2020. I think if you focus on these three ideas in 2020, you will contribute to the success of your company, no doubt.

First idea – marketers needs to continue focusing on providing exceptional customer experiences through innovative brand driving activities.

Second idea – know your customers better than your mother by understanding clearly your customer journeys from your on- and offline touch-points. For example, a prospect engages through a phone call, direct email or digital engagement.

The third idea – create exceptional emotional stories to inspire people and to propel your brand story forward through your customers, because
the customer is in control today.

These are my three main ideas for 2020. And this year, my source of inspiration was coming from Mark Schaefer’s new book called The marketing rebellion, where he predicts that the most human company wins, and I fully support his prediction.

Now it’s up to you who inspired you this year to make better marketing decisions? Let me know in the comments section, and I would love to hear from you.

But remember, as long as the Matterhorn stands, everything is going to be alright.

Cheers people from Lausanne and talk to you soon again from another great location. Looking forward to it. Bye.

Greetings from a Swiss mountain guy;-)

Marketers are asleep. Consumers are the new marketing department.

Hi people,

Welcome from paradise where I’m currently celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary. The Seychelles islands are a very special place and if you want to delight or surprise your partner one day, I mean this is the destination that you cannot go wrong. Just take a look at how beautiful the beach is in the back. You see some waves coming in, beautiful weather.
It’s not too warm today, beautiful conditions to enjoy a lovely holiday.

But now, let’s come back to my favorite subject again, which is marketing and I’m afraid to tell you that marketers, you are asleep. McKinsey’s research indicated already back in 2009 that consumer behaviors are changing the way they to do research and buy products today. Mark Schaefer’s new book called “Marketing Rebellion“, which came out at the beginning of 2019 highlights that consumers are the new marketing department. They are in control of a staggering 2/3 (two-thirds) of your marketing. Only 1/3 (one-third) is controlled by the marketing department.

I mean, please, this must be a wake-up call for you and me and all of us.
Here is what I would suggest doing.

We have to create consumer conversations, drip by drip, keeping your product or service in the mind of the consumers when they consider a purchase. Time over time. Period.

But remember, as long as the Matterhorn stands, everything will be alright.

Alright people, it was great talking to you. Have a good day and I continue enjoying my beautiful holiday at the Seychelles islands and I talk to you soon again from another special place. Talk to you soon. Bye bye.

Greetings from a Swiss mountain guy;-)

My Marketing Friends Are Stuck

Join the marketing rebellion movement launched by Mark Schaefer and let’s face the truth.

The advertising industry is in trouble because more and more consumers feel disrupted with impersonal ad messages and use ad-blockers to avoid them.

Today’s customers are in control. The customers are the marketing department. Don’t believe me? Watch the video and judge yourself.

I would love to hear from you.

How Much Do Social Scores Matter To You Today?

Not that I am getting obsessed with my Klout score after I read Mark Schaefer’s new book Return On Influence (Affiliate link) but I thought to do some more research through my Google reader. I wanted to know who else in the blogosphere is talking about social scores.

As Mark Schaefer shows in his book how Audi uses social influencers to attract new customers. Audi invited top design, technology, and luxury influencers to test drive the new 2011 Audi A8 at targeted events and a few lucky winners were even awarded all-expense-paid weekend trips with the car. How does that sound to you?;-)

Bottom line is as I quote from Mark’s book:

For all the faults, social scoring systems represent a targeted, high-potential, and relatively low-cost way to create buzz about products, services, and brands through powerful niche influencer. That is revolutionary.

Many other bloggers write these days about social profiling too.

What is your experience with social scores? Are you getting obsessed with your Klout score? Do you think a higher social scoring is going to get you a better job?

I am very curious to know.

Below you find must reads about the topic and if you haven’t taken it serious by now you certainly will after reading. Please leave a comment if you have a great link to share which talks about social influence.

Book Review: Return On Influence by Mark W. Schaefer

After already having resolved the mistery of Twitter through Mark Schaefer’s book “The Tao of Twitter” (affiliate link) I knew I had to get his new book “Return on Influence” (affiliate link) immediately. Mark explores the power of what he calls today citizen influencer. Everybody including YOU has the chance today to become an internet celebrity. You can earn your influence through a high Klout score which is discussed in depth in his book.

Not only will you learn more about social scoring systems you will also find great case studies explaining how big companies use today these systems to find the right people to connect, who can create buzz and  become the brands powerful word of mouth influencers on the web.

Many social thinkers such as Mitch Joel, Michael Stelzner, Gini Dietrich,Robert Cialdini, Robert Scoble and many more appear in the book with great stories. Another interesting part of the book is where Mark tells you more about how people try to game the system in order to get a higher social scoring. Not really something you should follow to do but certainly good to know;-)

I am not really in favor of judging people in a job interview based on your Klout score but I get the point. You can certainly use it as one of many criterias but your first impression, your charisma, your persuasiveness and of course your skill sets should still outweigh a number today. Nevertheless whether we like it or not social scoring is happening, period.

His book is definitely a hot topic and we live in a very exciting time where new technologies will continue to shaken up businesses;-)

Congratulations to Mark for another great book;-)

I am following Mark on his blog {GROW} and can only recommend his book.

Finally I took the time to download the kindle version of Mark W. Schaefer’s new Book Return On Influence: The Revolutionary Power of Klout, Social Scoring, and Influence Marketing
(affilate link) I really look forward to read. Only by just reading the introduction text where Mark says: “I have become a number” makes me wonder where is this leading us? I am sure to find in this book interesting stories about people’s own experiences which will lead me to rethink the quote “I have become a number”.

Our numbers are being compiled, sorted, sliced, diced, priced, dissected, combined and filleted in ways that help companies sell more of their stuff. — Mark W. Schaefer
